Connie has worked as a special education teacher in a variety of school systems and treatment centers for over 20 years. She has designed curriculum and goals for children with a wide range of disabilities and diagnoses, such as, ASD, speech and learning disabilities, mental and physical health disabilities and developmentally delays. Throughout her educational work Connie has incorporated her knowledge of the arts into her healing work by using the expressive arts with educational techniques to help children achieve their goals. Extending her special education knowledge and experience into the therapeutic context, Connie’s emphasis now is working with early childhood ages 2-5, she pulls from a number of educational approaches such as Reggio Emilia and Montessori to use in the therapeutic setting. Her sessions combine mindfulness techniques, observation, and documentation and are full of innovative ideas that she shares with the parent for home use.

Connie has also worked actively in the field of mental health patient rights and designed a document that later led to the creation of the psychiatric advanced directive (PAD). Legislative action in favor of this document has been passed in many states. It has also become a source for research in the area of mental health self-care.

Connie’s beliefs regarding her work in art therapy:
“With the use of all these tools my work is child centered but is always integrated within the context of the family support system.  This focus results in increased development and healing that stays with the child through life’s stages and life’s changes.”

Connie lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. She raised a wonderfully creative daughter who is following her passion.

In her home studio you will find her forever experimenting with art media and framing her life with studies in mindfulness.
